4 Things to Look for in Adaptive Learning Apps

When selecting learning apps to use at gt.school, we look for apps that meet some key criteria:

  1. Have good subject matter coverage
Apps should have thorough coverage of each grade level of a subject area, rather than cover only some topics at each grade level. Where possible, there should be alignment to Common Core standards.
  2. Enable independent learning
Students should be able to learn concepts in the apps and work through exercises all on their own, without parent or teacher explanation or assignment of activities.
  3. Provide adaptive learning
Adaptive learning apps tailor the content to the student’s level, providing a personalized learning path. Learning apps should ideally measure a student’s current knowledge, and provide lessons, practice problems and quizzes on the concepts where the student needs more practice and reinforcement.
  4. Focus on mastery learning
Mastery learning is the concept that students must master foundational subjects or concepts before moving on to more advanced learning. Apps should ideally ensure that students have mastered concepts before presenting new material.

The suggested apps here fulfill most, if not all of these criteria. They are also all available for home learning, whether for free or on a subscription.
